There are so many diets out there and new ones popping up every month it seems like! How do you choose which one to follow? Or maybe you’ve tried one or a dozen, but were always hungry, tired, and didn’t lose weight or keep it off! If that is the case, don’t give up! There are so many trending diets out there, that aren’t necessarily the safest or best to follow. Everybody’s bodies are built different and have different requirements so some diets don’t work for all! I am no doctor, but I am here to share with you my journey of food.
For about 12 years of my life, I had a stomach ache almost every day. I was only 13 at the time my digestive problems started, the internet wasn’t huge, and I relied on doctors. For 12 years on and off, doctors put me on different medication, had me get an ultra sound, and other random tests. Nothing seemed to change or help. Eventually my doctor told me to keep a food journal and I had finally found information online that would change my life forever! Long story short, the food journal and information I found online helped to point out that my issue was processed foods! Once I learned what made me tick, it was time to change my diet.
I encourage you to make a food journal, start by tracking your macros, and also log how what you ate made you feel. This is a great place to start because you can compare you daily intake with the national average macros. Doing this exercise will help you be more mindful of what you are actually putting in your body and what it means. For an example if your sodium is extremely high, be more mindful of ingredient lists. Adjusting the amount of sodium or other macro in your diet can be as simple as changing brands or opting for the “lite.” By logging how that food made you feel, will also help you learn what that food is doing to your body. Are you feeling fatigue? Are you feeling energetic? Do you get rashes? These are all things to pay attention to, to help you find the best diet or foods for your body.
When I started my food journal, I was instantly surprised as I thought I ate pretty good! My macros were all over the place, high sodium, low fiber, and so on. I slowly started to change the foods I was eating by looking at different brands or having dried fruit over chips. I was also extremely excited to learn that dairy was causing me to have breakouts and acne!
What To Eat?
I think its slightly odd when someone says they are dieting, going on a diet, or following a certain diet. The fact is, everyone in this world shouldn’t be on a diet. Everyone should be eating healthy, mindful and putting in their body what the earth provided. Which means no chemically created products, especially the ones where the FDA states can be harmful in large amounts, but still okay to eat in food products. Instead of a “diet” I am eating what makes me feel and look good, and contains the nutrients my body needs.
On the flip side when we say diet, I like to refer to a style of eating instead. Each style of eating has a different set of rules and when you mix those rules, there’s another name for that diet and so on. I have personally found what works best for me is to follow a paleo and low carb “diet.” My style of eating was chosen because 1. I was always hungry, 2. I broke out when I ate dairy, 3. I suffer from PCOS, and 4. I always had an upset stomach. It’s a strange combination because paleo discourages dairy, but a low carb diet is usually high in dairy because you want to increase the fat intake. So I stick to low carb food and recipes, while avoiding all processed foods! This is a super ideal style to eat because I have PCOSand when I eat this way I feel and look great! Once you have done your food journal for a couple of weeks, really process what you have written down and jot down some notes that stand out. That information should help you pick the best diet or healthy trend for you!
I am not going to list off a bunch of diets as they are all unique in their own way.
To sum it all up eat healthy, whole and real food, while pay attention to serving sizes!
Why To Eat Healthy?
There are sooooo many reason to eat healthy and we all know it! I don’t think I need to go into details here, but our bodies definitely need good nutrients to keep going and fight off disease and illness. Eating healthy isn’t just about going on a diet. Its all about living a healthier lifestyle.
Do you always have a cold? Are you always tired? Do you have an auto-immune disease? Do your muscle and joints always hurt? Try eating healthy! It has been shown in studies that eating healthier is the fix to many issues in the body. Changing your habits need to be a lifestyle change to see these improvements in your body because unfortunately it doesn’t happen over-night. Your body needs time to heal.
